In the so-called Blue Banana, we encounter the systems of today's globalization with the complex infrastructural, technical and organizational channels that sustain human life between city and countryside. It is the essence of globalized hyper-capitalism and extractivism. How did networking structures evolve in relation to constantly transforming dependencies on, for example, historical trade routes, fossil fuels, politically strategic processes, energy and information flows or ecological conditions? How can these be steered in a just, sustainable and resilient direction for the entire ecosystem of our planet? How can human, plant and animal habitats coexist in a universal network rather than just in isolation?

Big Blue Banana - 2021
To understand the Big Blue Banana, we first explore its history. From roman times to the present day, we observe ever-accelerating changes. The permanent transformation of Western Europe becomes evident - and the destruction that accompanies it. Today we find ourselves in the Anthropocene. European man has become a geological climate factor and is responsible for global warming and species extinction on an unprecedented scale. Climate Crisis is here. Now.

Aspects of Transformation

SEEDS of Transformation (DENKEN SIE JETZT!)
It is high time to create change. Utopias of Change help us to do this by formulating a vision with desirable, no-place concepts. Every action in the present is measured by whether it brings reality a little closer to the utopian vision. The transformation to the Green Banana, which merges into global harmony in 2100, represents a counter-design to the current trends of fatal global warming. It visualizes a desirable future, the beginnings of which we can already see spreading - right now.

The transformation of the Blue Banana, centered around the Rhine as an economic corridor, into a Green Earth is an after-modern utopia for Europe. Inspired by Bruno Latour, Lynn Margolis and Stefano Mancuso, we confront the geological scale of human impact and seek answers to the new geo-social question of the 21st century through terrestrial, post-anthropocentric thinking.
